I brush thick, colored slips called engobes over the textured areas of the bisque-fired piece. The piece is wiped with a sponge, leaving a clean, bright design on the surface. Once the entire piece has been slipped and wiped, a clear gloss glaze is applied to the piece. After it's fired, the surface takes on a shiny pastel appearance.
